The situation
To 14 October 2026, the US weekly pump price had not printed below $3.50 since early March 2026; the EIA's October outlook keeps every month to June 2027 above it.
What the number means
34% is the sum of three of seven scenarios to 30 June 2027: a deal and a winter week below $3.50 (16%), a deal with the first week below in summer (8%), or a week below without a deal (10%). Each is our estimate, scored when it resolves.

How it is decided

F-0237 · Deal, and a winter week below $3.50 · 16% · resolves by 30 Jun 2027
“Resolves if: Between 14 Oct 2026 and 28 Jun 2027 the US and Iran agree a text that ends hostilities, lifts the blockade or provides for reopening the strait, AND the first EIA weekly regular-gasoline print below $3.50 is dated 12 Oct 2026 to 26 Apr 2027.”
F-0238 · Deal, first week below in summer · 8% · resolves by 30 Jun 2027
“Resolves if: Between 14 Oct 2026 and 28 Jun 2027 the US and Iran agree a text that ends hostilities, lifts the blockade or provides for reopening the strait, AND no print before 3 May 2027 is below $3.50 but a print dated 3 May to 28 Jun 2027 is.”
F-0240 · A week below $3.50 without a deal · 10.5% · resolves by 30 Jun 2027
“Resolves if: No US-Iran text is agreed between 14 Oct 2026 and 28 Jun 2027, AND at least one EIA weekly regular-gasoline print dated 12 Oct 2026 to 28 Jun 2027 is below $3.50, whether or not the US strikes Iran.”

Geoeconomic
When could gasoline go below $3.50, and what would it mean for fuel buyers?
“The official outlook never reaches $3.50 before July 2027: its lowest month, February, sits 15.1 cents above. A week below the line needs Brent near $89, most plausibly after a US-Iran deal, and diesel and jet fuel would stay dear”
The brief’s reading of the evidence; not a registered forecast.
Addressed in: Part II · How far must oil fall, and would a deal take it there?
Geoeconomic · Geopolitical
How far must oil fall, and would a deal take it there?
“A week below the line needs a crude fall the outlook does not assume, most plausibly a US-Iran deal: Brent near $89 at February's margin, anywhere from about $55 to $98 across 2025-26 margins.”
The brief’s reading of the evidence; not a registered forecast.
Addressed in: Part III · Will the strait reopen, or can supply go around it?
Geopolitical · Geoeconomic
Will the strait reopen, or can supply go around it?
“Ships counted through the Strait of Hormuz run at 3.9% of their pre-war level. For a fuel buyer, this means the reopening that would lower crude has not started.”
The brief’s reading of the evidence; not a registered forecast.
Addressed in: 01 · From January to June 2027 the outlook stays within 28 cents of the line.
Geoeconomic
How close does the official outlook come to $3.50 from January to June 2027?
“On the official path, February 2027 is the month nearest the line, 15.1 cents above it. For an airline or trucking firm, that means fuel left open could gain from a dip between January and June 2027.”
The brief’s reading of the evidence; not a registered forecast.
Addressed in: 02 · Gasoline has printed at or above $3.50 for 31 weeks in a row.
Geoeconomic
How long has gasoline printed at or above $3.50?
“The weekly pump price has not printed below the line since early March 2026. For a fuel buyer, that means the pump price has to fall 85.4 cents, within 38 weekly prints, before the question is answered yes.”
The brief’s reading of the evidence; not a registered forecast.
Addressed in: 04 · A gasoline week below $3.50 would not mean cheap diesel or jet fuel.
Geoeconomic
Would a gasoline week below $3.50 mean cheap diesel or jet fuel?
“Diesel stays far dearer than gasoline in every month of the official outlook, and jet fuel has risen faster still. For airlines and truckers, that means a gasoline week below the line says little about their own fuel bill.”
The brief’s reading of the evidence; not a registered forecast.
Addressed in: 05 · February at $3.50 needs Brent near $89, far lower if margins stay wide.
Geoeconomic
What Brent price would put February 2027 at $3.50?
“At the outlook's own February margin, Brent of $89 a barrel puts that month's average at $3.50 (Exhibit 11). The outlook itself has February Brent at $95, about $6 higher.”
The brief’s reading of the evidence; not a registered forecast.
Addressed in: 09 · Supply around the strait adds little crude before the winter low.
Geoeconomic · Geopolitical
Does supply around the strait add crude before the winter low?
“OPEC's spare capacity averages 0.025 million barrels a day from October to March in the official outlook. For a fuel buyer, this means barrels that avoid the strait are not on course to deliver a winter dip on their own.”
The brief’s reading of the evidence; not a registered forecast.
Addressed in: 10 · Emergency stock adds crude in November and December and takes it back during 2027.
Geoeconomic
What does emergency stock add, and when does it take crude back?
“The government has authorised up to 44 million more barrels of emergency crude, and is owed at least 166 million back. For a fuel hedger, government barrels arrive before the official path's closest months to $3.50, then compete for crude.”
The brief’s reading of the evidence; not a registered forecast.
Addressed in: 11 · Gasoline stocks below their five-year average keep the margin route shut today.
Geoeconomic
Do gasoline stocks below their five-year average keep the margin route shut?
“US gasoline stocks sit 14.0 million barrels below their five-year average. For a retailer pricing against consumers' fuel budgets, the route below $3.50 through a thinner gasoline margin stays closed.”
The brief’s reading of the evidence; not a registered forecast.
