What changed

Dated, newest first

  1. Inflation 4.1% in September, core 3.2%; two-year expectations 3.0% (EEE) and 3.2% (EOF) [2]
  2. TPM held at 4.5% on 27 Oct 2026, unanimous; inflation risks have risen markedly; path judged meeting by meeting [1]
  3. Oil prices up about 25% since September; Imacec down 1% in August; next meeting 15 Dec 2026; minutes 4 Nov [1]
  4. EOF 20-21 Oct (62 replies): median TPM 4.5% at next meeting, 12 and 24 months; 12-month inflation expectation 3.7% (3.5% after and 3.3% before the September meeting), 13-24 months 3.2% [3]
  5. IPoM September 2026: GDP 2026 0.25-0.75%; unemployment 9.5%; inflation to 3% in Q2 2027; oil US$79 medium term [5]
  6. EEE September (48 replies): TPM 4.5% to end-2026, first cut to 4.25% in early 2028 [4]

Why it matters

The Banco Central de Chile held its rate at 4.5% on 27 Oct 2026 but said inflation risks had risen markedly. Fuel has pushed inflation to 4.1% while the economy shrinks. Forecasters still expect the rate to stay at 4.5% for two years. The risk is a rise to fight fuel-driven inflation in a weak economy.

Why Likelihood 3 C no: survey medians show a hold at every horizon. Pushes: the bank's warning that inflation risks have risen; inflation above target; expectations up at 12 and 13-24 months; oil up since September; diesel subsidy to unwind.

Why Impact 4 Threshold case: one quarter-point rise to 4.75%.

Three scenarios and their signposts

  1. S1

    Hold and wait

Fuel prices peak, inflation returns to 3% in Q2 2027 and the rate stays at 4.5%.

  2. S2

    One insurance rise

Second-round effects show in core inflation and the board raises by a quarter point.

  3. S3

    Stagflation squeeze

Oil spikes again and the peso weakens; the bank raises more than once despite a shrinking economy.

The signposts of each scenario
PathSignpost
S1Monthly inflation at or below 0.5% in Oct and Nov
S2Core inflation above 3.5% and 13-24-month expectations above 3.2%
S3The peso above 1,050 to the US dollar

No probability is given for the three paths.

The other side

Inflation that stays near 4% while forecasters expect no move lets savers earn real rates close to zero but positive [2][3]. If the bank holds, a weaker peso keeps Chile's non-copper exports such as fruit, wine and salmon priced well abroad (Strature's view).
