Egypt cuts gas to its fertiliser plants for two weeks

The test Between 28 Oct 2026 and 31 Oct 2027, Egyptian authorities halt natural gas supply to the country's nitrogen fertiliser plants, or cut it by at least half, for at least 14 consecutive days, as stated by the government or a producer's exchange filing, or reported by two independent news or trade sources.

Impact is the average of the four parts, rounded, plus one point when Canada is directly hit on two or more channels, up to 10.

Two separate scales from 1 to 10. Strature never multiplies or merges them.

What changed

Dated, newest first

  1. Brent US$114.87; WSJ: US warned Gulf states of a possible renewed Iran campaign after 3 Nov [7]

Why it matters

Egypt burns more gas than it produces, and Israeli pipeline gas covers about 45% of its imports in normal times (IEA). When Israel shut its Karish and Leviathan fields on 2 Mar 2026, Egypt cut gas to power plants, imposed energy-saving rules and bought record LNG; its urea plants kept running. A renewed US or Israeli campaign against Iran could shut the Israeli fields again, this time with LNG still dear.

Why Likelihood 4 Pushes: a reported US plan to renew its Iran campaign; the gas gap; a commentator's report of an official warning of industrial cuts (low confidence); high LNG prices; the summer peak inside the window.

Why Impact 3 Threshold case: a 14-day halt or cut of at least half.

The other facts on file (7)
  • Egypt used 59 bcm of gas in 2025; output fell from about 70 bcm (2021) to about 49 bcm (2024); gas nearly 80% of power; LNG almost 13 bcm in 2025; Israeli gas about 45% of imports in normal times; four FSRUs about 28 bcm/y [1] (Apr 2026)
  • Israel shut Karish and Leviathan on 2 Mar 2026 (IEA also gives 28 Feb); Leviathan resumed 2 Apr, Karish 9 Apr; Egypt LNG imports up 180% y/y in March-early April; Egypt reduced gas supplies to power plants; a key export pipeline link delayed by months [1] (20 Apr 2026)
  • Urea plants unaffected so far; capacity 7.2-7.3 Mt/y; exports about 350,000-400,000 t a month; domestic season peaks June-September [2] (25 Mar 2026)
  • A commentator says authorities warned of industrial gas cuts if escalation continued; no official named (low-confidence source) [3] (3 Mar 2026)
  • Gas import bill from about US$0.56bn to US$1.65bn a month; shops closed at 9 p.m. from 28 March [4] (Mar 2026)
  • Israel stopped gas exports to Egypt and Jordan on 13 Jun 2025 and restarted them on 20 Jun [5] (20 Jun 2025)
  • Contract with the Egyptian buyer at 6.7 bcm/y in 2026; debottleneck to 650 MMSCF/d planned for 3Q 2026 [6] (Jun 2026)

How it spreads

If

Channels 4 on the card

  1. CanadaNo Canadian loss; a gain for Canadian nitrogen producers does not count.
  2. UreaEgypt exports about 350,000-400,000 t of urea a month [2]; a two-week cut removes about half a month of exports (Strature arithmetic).
  3. Egypt's dollarsLost urea sales add to a gas bill near US$1.65bn a month [4].
  4. PowerA cut to industry means the supply gap has reached beyond the power plants (Strature's view).

Three scenarios and their signposts

  1. S1

    Held by LNG

Israeli gas flows, LNG is bought at a price and the plants run.

  2. S2

    Second shut-in

A renewed war on Iran shuts the Israeli fields again; Egypt cuts gas to industry for weeks.

  3. S3

    Summer squeeze

No war, but peak power demand in June-September 2027 and costly LNG lead to cuts.

The signposts of each scenario

S1Monthly LNG imports in the IEA's next gas report
S2An Israeli energy ministry order shutting Leviathan
S3A ministry statement on summer LNG cargoes

The other side

More Israeli gas is coming as pipeline capacity expands, though a link is delayed, and Egypt exported eight LNG cargoes last winter while importing record volumes (IEA). Fertiliser sellers elsewhere, including in Canada, gain if Egyptian urea leaves the market (Strature's view).
