Why it matters

Slovakia must elect a new parliament by autumn 2027. Progressive Slovakia has led or tied Prime Minister Robert Fico's Smer-SD in every poll since July. The two latest seat projections give five opposition parties 87 and 83 of the 150 seats. A new majority could end Bratislava's use of its EU veto on Russia sanctions and its pragmatic line with Moscow, but the opposition is split and one of its parties may miss the 5% threshold.

Why Likelihood 6 Pushes: Ipsos and Focus seat projections of 15-19 Oct and 12-19 Oct give the five parties 87 and 83 seats; PS has led or tied every poll since July.

Why Impact 4 Threshold case: the bloc wins 76 seats.

The other facts on file (3)
  • Slovakia blocked an EU sanctions package in Oct 2025 [9] (15 Oct 2025)
  • Slovakia conditioned the next sanctions package on Druzhba and lifted its block on 22 Apr 2026 [10] (23 Apr 2026)
  • European Parliament resolution of 20 May 2026 asks for the conditionality mechanism for Slovakia; about EUR 10.5bn of Program Slovensko unspent at end-April 2026 [11] (15 Jul 2026)

  1. CanadaNo Canadian loss sourced.
  2. EU sanctionsA majority without Smer would likely remove one of the governments that have used the veto on Russia sanctions (Strature's view).
  3. Russian energyThe gas contract to 2034 and Druzhba would face a government less keen on Moscow [8] (Strature's view).
  4. EU fundsA new majority could ease the rule-of-law dispute over about EUR 10.5bn of unspent Program Slovensko money [11].
  5. BudgetA new government inherits deficits near 5% of GDP and a breached debt brake [12].

Three scenarios and their signposts

  1. S1

    Opposition majority

PS leads a new coalition; Slovakia drops its veto line.

  2. S2

    Hung parliament

Demokrati or KDH miss 5% and no bloc has 76 seats; Republika becomes kingmaker.

  3. S3

    Fico again

Smer, Republika and Hlas reach a majority.

The signposts of each scenario
PathSignpost
S1PS and Hnutie Slovensko agree a joint programme
S2Demokrati below 5% in two polls
S3Smer leads PS in three polls in a row

No probability is given for the three paths.

The other side

A new majority could unlock EU money now at risk and end the veto fights over sanctions, lowering Slovakia's risk premium (Strature's view). For a Fico government, a scattered opposition is the chance to stay [5].
