Stellantis workers in Canada back a strike as auto tariffs loom
What happened
Unifor members at Stellantis in Canada voted 97.3% to authorise strike action, the union said on 19 Oct 2026, after votes on 17 and 18 Oct1. No strike has been called. The union is not yet in a legal strike position: neither side has asked for the "No Board" report that must come first1. Unifor represents about 9,000 Stellantis workers in Canada, and talks reached an impasse in September12. The union says the company tied the core economic settlement to an agreement to close and sell its idled Brampton, Ontario, plant27. Separately, Stellantis is idling its Windsor minivan plant for three weeks from 19 Oct, citing demand and tariffs, CBC News reports34.
Why it matters
The vote adds a labour risk to a trade risk in Canada's auto sector. Parts makers, dealers and the towns around the plants carry the cost of each idle week. Car makers decide where to build new models years ahead, so doubt over US tariffs weighs on those choices. Stellantis's head in Canada told employees in September that market and trade conditions had changed the business case for Brampton2. The other side: Roshel, a Canadian defence manufacturer, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Stellantis on a potential sale of the idled Brampton site2.
Background
Canada-US trade talks broke down in August 20265. On 24 Aug the US president said tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks and auto parts would rise to 50% from 1 Jan 202756. Auto parts had faced no US tariff before, AP and Reuters reported5. Brampton has built no cars since 2023, when more than 2,000 workers were laid off2. Unifor reached new agreements with Ford and GM without a strike vote7.
What it means for our forecasts
Key question KQ-11 asks whether a US proclamation adding a tariff of 50% or more on Canadian-made passenger vehicles is in force by 30 Sep 2027. We put it at 40% (F-0167), our estimate, scored when it resolves. Brief C-006 puts "escalation short of withdrawal" at 51% (F-0163), the zombie agreement at 27% (F-0162), and the trade war sorted out and temporary at 25% (F-0172)6. A strike vote is a labour step, not a trade measure, and bears on none of these directly. No resumption of talks was found to 19 Oct 2026. Our estimate did not move.
