What changed

Dated, newest first

  1. 31 collective negotiations in large-scale mining in 2027 (44 in 2026); Codelco 16 (8,429+ workers), BHP 3 (3,721) [1]
  2. Escondida Union No. 1: about 2,200 members; contract ends 1 Aug 2027; proposal early June, last offer about 25 July [1]
  3. Union president Sebastian Liberona considers a strike highly likely [2]
  4. Spence operators' contract ends 30 May 2027; Escondida Union No. 3 on 31 Dec 2027 [2]
  5. Centinela strike from 7 Oct 2026 by 709 workers (22% of own staff); operations continued; 36-month deal on 18 Oct [3]
  6. Labour Directorate mediation ended the Centinela strike; Escondida Union No. 2 settled days earlier [4]
  7. Chile copper output 3,248 kt Jan-Aug 2026, down 7.7%; August down 12.7%; copper above US$6.60/lb [9]

Why it matters

Chile's big copper mines face 31 collective negotiations in 2027. The main one is at Escondida in the Antofagasta region, which produced 1,261 thousand tonnes in its last year; its largest union's contract ends on 1 Aug 2027 and its president says the talks will be hard. In October 2026 one strike vote at Escondida ended in a deal through mediation, and a strike of 10 or 11 days at Centinela ended in a deal while operations continued. The risk is a strike that stops or cuts output for at least a week.

Why Likelihood 4 Pushes: union president's warning for Aug 2027; high copper prices; El Teniente safety; a crowded 2027 bargaining calendar. Brakes: mediation settled both Oct 2026 disputes; operations ran during the Centinela strike; the 2024 strike lasted three days. 4.

Why Impact 2 Threshold case: one large mine loses output for 7 days.

The other facts on file (2)
  • Escondida Union No. 1 strike 13-16 Aug 2024, three days [7] (16 Aug 2024)
  • Escondida output 1,261 kt in FY2026 [8] (30 Jun 2026)

Channels 4 on the card

  1. CanadaChile holds 18.1% of Canadian mining assets abroad; no Canadian loss shown [10].
  2. Copper supplyA week at Escondida's rate is about 24 kt, about US$0.35bn (Strature calculation) [8][9].
  3. Chile's exports and taxesLost output cuts exports and tax receipts in a weak year [9].
  4. Labour peaceA long strike sets terms for Codelco's 16 talks [1].

Three scenarios and their signposts

  1. S1

    Deals by mediation

Strikes are voted but settled with the Labour Directorate's help.

  2. S2

    Short strike

A strike of a few days, as in 2024.

  3. S3

    Long stoppage

A strike of weeks at the largest mine.

The signposts of each scenario
PathSignpost
S1A signed Escondida deal before 1 Aug 2027
S2A strike called in late July or early August 2027
S3The company invokes minimum service teams and reports lost output

No probability is given for the three paths.

The other side

A strike in Chile lifts copper prices for other producers, including Peru and Canada (Strature's view). Settled contracts of 36 months, as at Centinela and Escondida's supervisors in October 2026, would give those two mines labour peace into late 2029 (Strature calculation) [3][5].
