What changed

Dated, newest first

  1. EU regulations dated 30 Jun 2026; all duties on US industrial goods removed from 1 Jul 2026; suspension of EU counter-measures extended on 31 Jul 2026 [7]
  2. No Federal Register document raising the EU car rate found since the 2025 notice [10]
  3. German car exports (HS 8703) to the US EUR 25.2bn in 2024 and EUR 20.2bn in 2025, of EUR 162.5bn and EUR 156.8bn in total [9]

Why it matters

Since 1 Aug 2025 EU cars have paid a combined 15% US tariff under the US-EU framework, in place of the Section 232 car tariff. On 1 May 2026 President Trump said he would raise it to 25%; no increase took effect, and the EU cut its duties on US industrial goods from 1 Jul 2026. The US took 12.9% of Germany's car exports by value in 2025, EUR 20.2bn of EUR 156.8bn.

Why Likelihood 4 Pushes: threat on record; the EU's 31 Dec 2026 steel test; the US imposed new Section 301 tariffs in July 2026. Brakes: the EU cut its duties from 1 Jul 2026; no notice in six months; the Section 301 tariff exempts Section 232 goods.

Why Impact 5 Key price: the US tariff on EU cars. Threshold case: a rate above 15%, e.g. 25%.

  • Šefčovič and Greer met in Paris on 5 May 2026; the 25% was a threat with no effective date [4] (5 May 2026)
  • EU cars and parts faced up to 27.5% before the July 2025 deal; no extra tariff had taken effect by 5 May 2026; US 18.4% of EU vehicle export value in 2025 (ACEA); German brands about 1.2m of 16.3m US light vehicle sales in 2025 [5] (5 May 2026)
  • European Parliament approved the tariff regulations on 16 Jun 2026; the EU may suspend its cuts if the US charges more than 15% on steel and aluminium derivatives by 31 Dec 2026 [6] (25 Jun 2026)
  • Section 301 notice: EU goods 10% net of MFN from 24 Jul 2026; goods under Section 232 tariffs, cars and parts included, exempt [8] (28 Jul 2026)
