Why it matters

Japan has run a goods trade deficit for five months in a row, May to September 2026, and 2.81tn yen for April-September, while its crude import bill was up 51.1% on a year earlier in September. The Ministry of Finance data already show the condition; the question is whether it holds for October 2026 to March 2027 taken together. Oil prices, not weak exports, drive it: exports rose 16.7% in September.

Why Likelihood 8 Pushes: Brent near US$110; EIA US$105 for 4Q26; yen at 158; last year's half year in deficit, driven by January 2026, before the oil-price rise. Brakes: EIA US$84 for 2027; seasonal surpluses.

Why Impact 4 Key price: the crude import bill; threshold case a small combined deficit.

Three scenarios and their signposts

  1. S1

    Deficit holds

Brent stays near US$100 and the half year ends in deficit.

  2. S2

    Seasonal surplus

Strong chip and car exports and a lower oil price bring surpluses in December and March, enough to erase the deficit.

  3. S3

    Wider gap

A new Hormuz closure lifts crude above US$120 and monthly deficits above 1tn yen.

The other side

Japan buys more crude and LNG from outside the Gulf: US crude was a third of September volume [1]. LNG Canada reached a final investment decision on Phase 2 on 28 Sep 2026; Mitsubishi Corporation holds 15% [11]. Japan's search for non-Gulf supply widens demand for Pacific LNG, Canada's West Coast among it (Strature's view).
