Kazakhstan's uranium output for 2026 falls short of its target
The test Kazakhstan's uranium production for 2026 on a 100% basis, as first reported by Kazakhstan's national uranium operator or its government between 28 Oct 2026 and 27 Oct 2027, is below 27,500 tU, the low end of the 2026 target.

What changed
Dated, newest first
- Russia's acid export approval regime runs to 31 Dec 2026; the operator expects no material impact on 2026 guidance [4]
Why it matters
Kazakhstan mines about 40% of the world's uranium. Its national operator plans 27,500-29,000 tonnes of uranium (tU) in 2026, subject to sulphuric acid availability. Output rose 9% in the first half to 13,291 tU and the target was restated in August. A shortfall would need a second-half slip, most likely from acid supply; the full-year figure is due in early 2027.
Why Likelihood 3 The second half needs only modest growth on a year earlier; the 2025 target was met. Acid limits last until a new plant in early 2027.
Why Impact 4 Threshold case: 2026 output a few hundred tonnes below 27,500 tU.
The other facts on file (10)
- 2026 guidance 27,500-29,000 tU on a 100% basis (14,500-15,500 tU attributable), subject to sulphuric acid availability; growth mainly from Budenovskoye, whose 2026 output is under offtake to Russia's nuclear industry [3] (2 Feb 2026)
- Output 25,839 tU in 2025 (target 25,000-26,500) and 23,270 tU in 2024 [3] (2 Feb 2026)
- Output 13,291 tU in H1 2026, up 9%; Q2 7,147 tU, up 8%; production guidance restated [1] (3 Aug 2026)
- H1 2026 average month-end spot price US$86.83/lb U3O8, up 25%; long-term price US$95.50/lb [1] (3 Aug 2026)
- Cigar Lake mining stopped 12 days over acid supply at the McClean Lake mill; full-year guidance kept [1] (3 Aug 2026)
- Kazakhstan about 40% of world mine output; a new Turkestan acid plant of 800,000 t a year due in early 2027; Trans-Caspian route 48% of deliveries to Western customers in 2025 [2] (24 Aug 2026)
- Kazakh-origin uranium 28% of 46.9 million lb U3O8e delivered to US reactor operators in 2025; Canada 32% [7] (2025)
- Kazakh uranium 20.3% of deliveries to EU utilities in 2025 (Euratom Supply Agency, as reported) [2] (2025)
- Canada produced 14,327 t of uranium in 2024, second in the world with 24%, and exported 90% [8] (2024)
- Canada imported C$305m of uranium from Kazakhstan in 2023, 51.6% of imports from Kazakhstan [5] (2023)
Where it sits
How it spreads
Kazakhstan's uranium production for 2026 on a 100% basis, as first reported by Kazakhstan's national uranium operator or its government between 28 Oct 2026 and 27 Oct 2027, is below 27,500 tU, the low end of the 2026 target.
Not under wayChannels 4 on the card
- CanadaCanada imports Kazakh uranium [5]; no Canadian loss from a shortfall is sourced.
- UtilitiesSpot buyers in the US and EU would be squeezed first (Strature's view); most output is under long-term contracts [2].
- PricesLess Kazakh supply would add to a rising long-term price [1].
- Russia and ChinaContract buyers under offtake deals would claim their volumes first [2][3].

Three scenarios and their signposts
- S1
On target
Acid supply holds and output lands inside the range.
- S2
Acid squeeze
Russian acid deliveries fall short in the second half and output misses the low end.
- S3
New acid, more output
The Turkestan acid plant starts in early 2027 and eases the limit for 2027.

| S1 | The fourth-quarter trading update, expected in early February 2027 |
| S2 | A guidance cut in the third-quarter update |
| S3 | First acid from the plant |
No probability is given for the three paths.

The other side
A Kazakh shortfall would help other producers. Canada was the second-largest producer in 2024, with 14,327 tonnes and 24% of world output, and exported 90% of it [8]; new Saskatchewan projects are under way [1]. It would also add weight to the Trans-Caspian route and to acid plants in Kazakhstan (Strature's view).
