Why it matters

Singapore's economy grew 5.4% year on year in the third quarter of 2026, on advance estimates, with electronics among the leading manufacturing clusters. Electronic domestic exports more than doubled in September on what Enterprise Singapore calls robust AI-related demand. MAS expects growth to ease from the second half of 2027 as that cycle cools and warns that a sharper pullback in AI-related investment could drag on growth; two quarters of falling GDP inside the window remain a tail case.

Why Likelihood 3 Pushes: MAS names a sharper pullback in AI-related investment as a risk; manufacturing fell quarter on quarter in two of the last three quarters; tighter financial conditions. Brakes: MAS sees moderation only from 2H 2027.

Why Impact 4 Threshold case two shallow quarterly falls.

Channels 4 on the card

  1. CanadaC$3.19bn of exports to Singapore [7] could be cut; no loss sourced.
  2. Jobs and budgetsTwo quarters of falling output would pressure the budget and wage growth.
  3. Chip supply chainAn electronics-led slump would signal a turn in regional chip demand.
  4. Monetary policyMAS, which kept its policy band in October, would be under pressure to ease it (Strature's view).

Three scenarios and their signposts

  1. S1

    Soft landing

Growth slows towards the IMF's 3.0% for 2027 without a fall in output.

  2. S2

    One soft quarter

One quarter of falling GDP as the electronics cycle turns, then growth.

  3. S3

    Technical recession

A sharp pullback in AI-related investment hits electronics output for two quarters.

The signposts of each scenario
PathSignpost
S1METI's 2027 forecast in November 2026 above 1%
S2A quarter-on-quarter fall in a 2027 advance estimate
S3Electronic export growth negative year on year for three months

No probability is given for the three paths.

The other side

The trade ministry credits AI-related capital spending for its upgrade [2]. If the cycle eases slowly, as MAS expects [4], firms gain time to spread demand across more products and buyers.
