Ship attacks near Hormuz hit a wartime high; Brent touches US$110

What happened

At least 12 ships were attacked near the Strait of Hormuz in the week to 16 Oct 2026, the UK Maritime Trade Operations centre (UKMTO) said1. It added that most ships hit no longer report, so the true number may be higher1. October has seen the most attacks of any month of the war, Al Jazeera reports1. On 16 Oct two tankers were hit north-east of Jubail, Saudi Arabia, one by a rocket-propelled grenade from a small boat; UKMTO said all crew were safe23. Iran's Revolutionary Guard said on 17 Oct that two laden supertankers had struck mines12. The US Central Command says it has cleared the strait of mines and that ships are being hit by projectiles1.

Why it matters

Each attack raises the cost of moving Gulf oil and gas. Oil through the strait averaged 11.6 million barrels a day in the seven days to 13 Oct, Kpler data show, about 68% of the pre-war 17.1 million1. Brent crude touched US$110 a barrel on 16 Oct, its first time at that level since May12. Shippers, war-risk insurers, and importers of Gulf crude and liquefied gas carry the cost. The other side: oil and gas producers whose exports avoid the strait sell into a higher price, and the 125 outbound transits UKMTO counted in seven days show that much of the trade still moves1.

Background

The war began on 28 Feb 2026 with US and Israeli strikes on Iran2. A ceasefire followed in April and a US-Iran memorandum of understanding in June, but attacks in and around the strait went on2. Iran says ships must coordinate with its Persian Gulf Strait Authority1. The United States keeps a naval counter-blockade of Iranian ports2. The container ship GFS Pride sank under tow on 14 Oct15.

What it means for our forecasts

Brief S-001 asks whether US or Israeli forces strike Iran between 22 Aug and 20 Nov 2026 (key question KQ-01). We put a renewed strike at 61% (F-0074), our estimate, scored when it resolves. The brief names an attack on US forces as a signpost that would move its view up4; none was reported in the sources read to 19 Oct. The US had not answered the latest ship attacks, Al Jazeera reported1. Attacks without a settlement bear on brief C-002's Guard-Managed Attrition, 13.74% (F-0020), Frozen Siege, 9.2% (F-0010), and Contested Drift, 11.7% (F-0008). Our estimate did not move.

No estimate changes with this note. Estimates are our own, sealed when issued, and scored when they resolve.
