Impact is the average of the four parts, rounded, plus one point when Canada is directly hit on two or more channels, up to 10.
Two separate scales from 1 to 10. Strature never multiplies or merges them.
Why it matters
Qatar made a third of the world's helium in 2025, and its Ras Laffan output has been stopped or cut since March. Taiwan's chip makers sourced nearly 88% of their helium imports from Qatar in 2025, and South Korea about 65%. Yet seven months on, no chip maker in either economy has reported cutting output for lack of helium; stocks, recycling and other suppliers have held so far.
Why Likelihood 3 Pushes: Qatar's output stopped or cut for seven months; short container life. Brakes: no cut reported so far; stocks and diversification; fabs can outbid other users. A driver exists but is blocked.
Why Impact 4 Threshold case one reported cut at one fab for some weeks; key price contract helium.
The other facts on file (6)
- World helium output about 190 million m3 in 2025; Qatar 63 million; US about 81 million; Canada 6 million; Canada 47% and Qatar 28% of US helium imports 2021-24; base price about US$12 per m3 [1] (Feb 2026)
- Qatar's state gas company (QatarGas, per AP) said strikes would cut annual helium exports by 14%; South Korea about 65% of helium from Qatar (Fitch); TSMC expected no significant impact; KSIA said short-term supply sufficient; containers hold liquid helium 35-48 days; about 200 stuck; spot prices doubled; spot about 2% of market (Kornbluth, via AP) [2] (21 Mar 2026)
- Taiwan chip makers sourced nearly 88% of helium imports from Qatar in 2025, up from 46% four years earlier [3] (6 Jul 2026)
- South Korean chip makers held helium to run through at least June [4] (1 Apr 2026)
- No confirmed restart date for Qatari helium; Hormuz the sole export route; Russia helium export controls from 14 Apr 2026; contract prices could rise 40-60%; South Korea 64.7% of 2025 helium from Qatar [5] (9 Jun 2026)
- QatarEnergy partially restarted its Helium2 plant at roughly 25% of normal capacity, one of four fill bays (distributor's note; low confidence) [9] (31 Aug 2026)

How it spreads
Between 26 Oct 2026 and 31 Oct 2027, chip output in Taiwan or South Korea is cut for lack of helium, as stated by a chip maker, an industry association or a government.
Not under wayChannels 4 on the card
- CanadaNo Canadian loss sourced; Canada is a helium supplier to the US (gain).
- Chip supplyTaiwan exported US$31.13bn of electronic components in September 2026 alone [7]; a cut at a Taiwanese or South Korean fab would reach chip buyers worldwide.
- Chip pricesA reported cut would tighten an already strong market.
- Other helium usersA chip-led scramble raises helium prices for hospitals and labs.

Three scenarios and their signposts
- S1
Stocks and recycling hold
Fabs ride out the stop on stock, recycling and US and Algerian supply.
- S2
A winter squeeze
Force majeure runs into 2027, spot prices climb again, and one fab trims runs.
- S3
Qatar restarts
The strait reopens and Ras Laffan's helium resumes; prices ease.
| Path | Signpost |
|---|---|
| S1 | No cut reported by the end of the first quarter of 2027 |
| S2 | A new end date for Qatari force majeure after 30 Nov 2026 |
| S3 | Qatari LNG carriers transit the strait freely |
No probability is given for the three paths.
