Impact is the average of the four parts, rounded, plus one point when Canada is directly hit on two or more channels, up to 10.

What changed
Dated, newest first
- Nomura expects a hold on 29 Oct, hikes in Dec 2026 and Mar 2027 to 3.00%; markets price about 75 bp by Sep 2027 [6]
- Euro area HICP inflation 3.2% in Aug and 3.8% in Sep 2026; core 2.5% in Sep (2.4% in Aug); energy 18.9% in Sep [5]
- Lagarde: no signs yet that higher energy prices are becoming embedded in inflation or wages [4]
- Deposit rate 2.25% from 17 Jun 2026 and 2.50% from 16 Sep 2026; 2.00% from 11 Jun 2025 [1]
- 10 Sep 2026: 25 bp hike; staff see headline inflation 3.0% (2026), 2.5% (2027), 2.1% (2028); core 2.5%, 2.6%, 2.3%; growth 0.9%, 1.4%, 1.5%; no pre-commitment [2]
- Markets priced 84 bp of hikes by end-2027, the September hike included (64 bp at the July meeting); market terminal rate above 3%; surveys saw a plateau at 2.50%; oil about US$97, gas about EUR73/MWh; all members backed the hike [3]
Why it matters
The ECB has raised its deposit rate twice this year, to 2.50% from 16 Sep 2026, because the Middle East conflict keeps energy prices high. Euro area inflation rose to 3.8% in September, with energy prices up 18.9% on a year earlier. Markets price about 75 basis points more by September 2027 (Nomura, 22 Oct); one more step of 25 points is enough for this risk.
Why Likelihood 7 Pushes: markets pricing 84 bp by end-2027 (September, that hike included) and about 75 bp by September 2027 (October), Nomura's base case of hikes in December and March, a unanimous hike with no signal it was the last.
Why Impact 5 Key price the deposit rate; threshold case one 25 bp step.

- Euro area borrowersMortgages, company loans and floating-rate debt reprice upward; mortgage activity was already weaker.
- Public budgetsInterest bills rise as debt rolls over in France, Italy and Belgium.
- GrowthA further step weighs on growth projected at 0.9% for 2026 [2].
Three scenarios and their signposts
- S1
One more, then hold
Inflation stays above 3%; one hike, to 2.75%, then a hold.
- S2
Two or more
Energy prices stay high and core inflation rises; the deposit rate reaches 3.00% or more, as Nomura expects.
- S3
Energy falls, no hike
Oil and gas fall as futures implied in September, inflation drops, and 2.50% is the peak.
| Path | Signpost |
|---|---|
| S1 | A hike on 17 Dec 2026 |
| S2 | Core inflation above 2.6% in the October or November release |
| S3 | Headline inflation below 3% in the Eurostat releases before the March 2027 meeting |
No probability is given for the three paths.

The other side
Savers earn more on deposits. A firm response that anchors expectations can shorten the shock and allow earlier cuts.
