Why it matters
Trade in AI-enabling goods rose 67% in value in the first half of 2026 and made 47% of world merchandise trade growth, the WTO said on 8 Oct. Its last fall was in 2023 (-10%). Every current sign points up: record September exports in Taiwan and South Korea, TSMC guiding higher. A fall would need the investment wave to stop, or prices of memory and accelerators to break, within a year.
Why Likelihood 3 Pushes: a very high base after record second-quarter growth, part of the growth is price, the WTO names a reversal as a main risk. Brakes: market forecasts of more data-centre spending in 2027, record September exports in Taiwan and South Korea, TSMC guiding higher.
Why Impact 6 Threshold case: a half-year or quarter just below a year earlier.

Three scenarios and their signposts
- S1
Slower growth
The rise slows from a high base, as the WTO expects, and stays positive.
- S2
Price break
Memory and accelerator prices fall while volumes hold, and value turns negative in one quarter.
- S3
Spending cut
The largest buyers cut 2027 capital plans and orders fall in Asia.

| S2 | South Korea's chip exports falling on a year (Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources data) |
| S3 | A 2027 capital spending guide below 2026 from a large US buyer |
No probability is given for the three paths.

The other side
A slower pace would ease the power and grid strain of the build-out and free chips for other users. Economies outside the current top ten, including Mexico and Viet Nam, gain share as the trade spreads [2].

- China squeezes Taiwan's sea lanes: quarantine or blockade Driven by: Taiwan sits at the centre of the largest exporter group; a quarantine would cut supply [2].
- South Korea's chip export boom turns into a fall Drives: The same trade seen in South Korea's monthly chip exports [6].
- Singapore's chip-led boom turns into a technical recession Drives: Singapore is one of the WTO's Southeast Asia six exporters [2].
- The US widens its Section 232 chip tariff from a short list to most chips Shares a channel: US duties on chips act on the same flow.
